FAQ

Who owns and operates the ReStore? The ReStore is an enterprise of the Center for Ecological Technology (CET), a non-profit (501c3) community based environmental organization that started in 1976 with offices in Northampton and Pittsfield.

What is a non-profit organization? A non-profit organization is formed for the purpose of serving the public good by means other than the pursuit or accumulation of profit. It is a private (non-governmental) corporation chartered by the State to serve the public through programs and services specific to the mission of the organization. Non-profit organizations do not have owners or stockholders, and are governed by a Board of Directors from the community. Examples of other well-known non-profits that operate retail outlets as a part of their work (but are not affiliated in any way with the ReStore) include the Salvation Army, Goodwill Industries and local Hospice Shops.

Where does the money from sales of materials go? All proceeds from the ReStore help cover the costs associated with its operation: rent, heating, electricity, staff salaries, supplies, telephone, etc. The ReStore has also received grants from private foundations and government sources to help cover costs during the first few years of operations. Any surplus funds must be reinvested in the ReStore or other CET programs that benefit our community.
